Cognitive behavioral therapy interventions are wonderful and well-researched, and provide my clients significant benefit.
That said, ever notice how when you’re amped up, the best intentions and reframing sometimes go out the window? As a somatic practitioner, I educate my clients on their nervous system, how to regulate it, biofeedback, and weave neuroscience nuggets in to promote a better understanding of the brain-body relationship. Trauma and stress are indeed stored in the body (read Body Keeps the Score by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk for a keen understanding of this concept) and recognizing physiological arousal states and engaging in down regulation are integral to optimizing our minds and bodies.
